Alors j’aimerais savoir 2 choses.

Supplies of oil may be inexhaustible

By Bruce Bartlett

On April 16, Newsday, the Long Island newspaper, published a startling report that old oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico were somehow being refilled. That is, new oil was being discovered in fields where it previously had not existed.  Scientists, led by Mahlon Kennicutt of Texas A&M University, speculate that the new oil is surging upward from deposits well below those currently in production. “Very light oil and gas were being injected from below, even as the producing was going on,” he said.  Although it is not yet known whether this is a worldwide phenomenon or commercially important, the new discovery suggests that there may be far more oil and gas within the Earth’s core than previously thought.

OIL – A RENEWABLE and ABIOTIC FUEL?

“Oil is often called a ‘fossil’ fuel; the idea being that it comes from formerly living organisms. This may have been plausible back when oil wells were drilled into the fossil layers of the earth’s crust; but today, great quantities of oil are found in deeper wells that are found below the level of any fossils. How could then oil have come from fossils, or decomposed former living matter, if it exists in rock formations far below layers of fossils the evidence of formerly living organisms? It must not come from living matter at all!”

Crude oil was made to be thought of as “Fossil” fuel by the Nineteenth Century oil producers to create the concept that it was of limited supply and therefore extremely valuable. This fits with the “Depletion”allowance philosophical scam and current day price fixing. During one of our C.S.I.S. “International Nights” (1978) the Common Market Energy boss, M. Montibrial of France, told us that while petroleum was being marketed then for $20.00 per barrel or more, it cost no more than 25 cents per barrel at the wellhead. There is our petroleum problem! We were paying more than $1.50-$1.60 per gallon, one 42nd of a barrel, at that time.

How to convince a client their site doesn’t need background music

As a professional web developer with a few too many years of implementing ridiculous requests, I’ve acquired quite a knack for convincing a client that background music is a bad idea. This article contains 9 arguments I use to achieve that goal.

How to Convince a Client their Site Doesn’t Need Music

Posted by Matthew Inman (Oatmeal) ( http://www.seomoz.org/team/matthew ) on Mon (10/2/06) at 06:13 PM Webdev ( http://www.seomoz.org/blog/category/29 )

I’ve lost count of how many clients have requested that music be playing in the background of their website.  As a professional web developer with a few too many years of implementing ridiculous requests, I’ve acquired quite a knack for convincing a client that music is a bad idea.  There are obvious exceptions: such as band websites or sites heavily involved in multimedia.  I’m talking about content-rich sites where the user does not expect (or want) a multimedia experience.

The next time a client decides that a bit of oontz-oontz might give them a bit of an  “edge,”  refer to this list to convince them that they’re really just making their site suck.

  1. It’s obtrusive:  Having music playing in the background can interrupt whatever is currently coming through the users speakers.  Many people use their computers as media stations that play music and video.  Having this suddenly interrupted is the  equivalent of having a newspaper that jumps off the table and wraps around your head like a facehugger and starts laying headlines in your throat. There’s probably a better example to use when actually speaking to the client, but you get the idea:  It’s forcing something down the users throat they didn’t ask for.   Users expect web pages to contain useful information, not carry a tune.
  2. It cuts off when you click around:  Unless you’ve got some kind of hidden frame (if you do, you’ve got bigger problems than music right now), the sound will cut off every time they click from page to page.
  3. Not all browsers and operating systems support multimedia content:   There are a lot of older browsers out there on the net that might not support multimedia or will have serious issues playing it. This is a difficult point for the client to argue with because it’s a technical issue.   I always like to present them with the question: “If you had to choose between some users being able to hear music and some having their browser crash OR  having everyone be able to view the site without any issues,  which would you choose?”
  4. It slows things down: Having music playing will decrease the performance of the site, especially on slower machines. Not only will this make the user experience poor during their visit, it’ll also make them less inclined to visit your site again for fear it’ll once again transform things into molasses.
  5. It’s tacky and unprofessional:  Play to their vanity: having background music was cool in the mid-nineties when the web was first coming together. Now it’s not, it’s considered dated and the mark of an amateur.  If you’re gonna put background music in, you might as well put on a pair of hammer pants.  You’re a fossil, go sit in a museum and fart dust.
  6. There’s a reason other sites don’t have music:  Many clients think that since the majority of the web does not play music, by having it on their site they’re being exceptional and will stand out from the competition.  This is wrong, the reason most sites don’t have music playing is because most sites agree that it’s a bad idea.   Just because you’ve never seen a site on the web with a giant kitten for a cursor doesn’t mean that you should be the first one to try.
  7. Not everyone may like your music:  What some people consider ambient and pleasant, others may find to be annoying, elevator music.
  8. Ask them if they’ve ever surfed myspace:    Ever gotten to someone’s myspace page and found yourself frantically trying to find the STOP button on the music player they’ve embedded somewhere in the abomination they call a profile?   Meanwhile your speakers are blaring some crappy emo song about crying in dark puddles.    Chances are many clients have experienced this firsthand and can directly relate to your frustration.  If this backfires, however, and the client thinks that since myspace is huge and successful that mimicking them is a good idea, point out that they were voted the #1 worst website of 2006 by PC World.
  9. It uses up bandwidth: This is hardly an issue nowadays, but if it’s a high traffic site having music may run the risk of putting it over its traffic limit and costing extra money.

http://www.gwn.com/news/story.php/id/12360/MSNBC_Calls_Out_Thompson.html

The rush to judge games as responsible for the V-Tech massacre was spearheaded by christian conservative and anti-game campaigner Jack Thompson, but now that the (http://www.gwn.com/news/story.php/id/12287/No_Games_Found_in_Shooters_Dorm_at_Virginia_Tech.html) shows Cho didn’t own a single video game, the media are starting to question his fervant accusations.

A new article published by media giant MSNBC reads:

“it didn’t require much skill for Cho to shoot as many people as he did. After all, eye witness accounts indicate many of the victims were shot at point-blank range.

And for all of Thompson’s claims that violent video games are the cause of school shootings, Sternheimer [a sociologist at the University of Southern Calfornia and author of the book “Kids These Days: Facts and Fictions About Today’s Youth”] points out that before this week’s Virginia Tech massacre, the most deadly school shooting in history took place at the University of Texas in Austin… in 1966. Not even “Pong” had been invented at that time.

“One thing that people often don’t realize is that in the years since video game sales have really exploded, not only have youth violence rates decreased but violence rates in the U.S. have declined precipitously,” she added.

Meanwhile, Sternheimer says the rush to blame video games in these situations is disingenuous for yet another reason. Although it remains unclear whether Cho played games, it seems nobody will be surprised if it turns out he did. After all, what 23-year-old man living in America hasn’t played video games?

“Especially if you’re talking about young males, the odds are pretty good that any young male in any context will have played video games at some point,” Sternheimer says.

“I think in our search to find some kind of answer as to why this happened, the video game explanation seems easy,” she says. “It seems like there’s an easy answer to preventing this from happening again and that feels good on some level.”

The blame game

Jason Della Rocca agrees. “Everyone wants a simple solution for a massively complex problem. We want to get on with our lives.”

As the leader of an organization that represents video game creators from all over the world, Della Rocca knows the routine all too well.

Someone opens fire on a school campus. Someone blames video games. His phone starts ringing. People start asking him questions like, “So how bad are these games anyway?”

Of course, he also knows that this is far from the first time in history that a young form of pop culture has been blamed for any number of society’s ills. Rock and roll was the bad guy in the 1950s. Jazz was the bad guy in the 1930s. Movies, paintings, comic books, works of literature…they’ve all been there.

Still, Della Rocca believes that people like Thompson are “essentially feeding off the fears of those who don’t understand games.”

For those who didn’t grow up playing video games, the appeal of a game like “Counter-Strike” can be hard to comprehend. It can be difficult to understand that the game promotes communication and team work. It can be hard fathom how players who love to run around gunning down their virtual enemies do not have even the slightest desire to shoot a person in real life.

“It’s the thing they don’t understand,” Della Rocca says. “It’s a thing that’s scary.”

It’s been said often that while everyone is entitled to his own opinion, no one is entitled to his own facts. Today, we hear misstatements all the time. Some of them are deliberate lies. Some of them are just mistakes.

A House committee has just exposed the terrible fact that Army officials fabricated a story about the death of Pat Tillman and lied through their teeth. The Army knew from Day One that Tillman died from so-called friendly fire, but it was five weeks before Army officials got around to telling the family.

Greetings fellow player!

Thank you for contacting the Shadowbane Customer Care team.

If I understand correctly, you are having difficulties with masturbation, herein refered to as “deliberate fondling of one’s self”, in relation to your son and is age I presume.

In order to better assist you and your family, the loving and caring Shadowbane team has compiled a list of very interesting links to help you and your son understand masturbation.

Whenever you have time and feel like dealing with masturbation, we invite you to get yourself something to drink (beer preferably), sit down, relax, next to a box of tissues (just in case, you know allergies and such), and casually browse what you want to browse. It is your choice whether to click one link or the other, and the order has no relevance:

http://www.hopeforfamily.org/expl_sexuality_to_teen_f01.htm

http://www.drspock.com/topic/0,1504,156,00.html

And this one by the Domestic Church:

http://www.domestic-church.com/CONTENT.DCC/19980701/ARTICLES/SEXUALITY.HTM

So I sincerely hope that you can get a grip with this matter and really explain, while details, pictures and videos are optional, what masturbation is to your son. You might want to have your wife/girlfriend/whore to provide a helping hand, also just in case your son asks about masturbation and women. This way, your son will be armed with powerful knowledge when it’ll be time to “get it on” with the ladies.

You cannot find more information about masturbation in our Faqs at <http://care.ubi.com> Http://care.ubi.com.

Please contact us again if you have any other sexually related problems.

The Shadowbane Customer Caring and Loving team.

————————

Good day Mr. Chavez,

I understand the issue that may have arisen with your son but like in any community, you will always get people who do not care about others and will talk and do anything to either provoke or harass. Considering the size of the community, it is difficult to catch all these disruptive players in time to act accordingly. That is why we gave you, the players, the tools to help you deal with this matter until we can. They are not 100% fullproof but they provide a helping hand. Remember that you should always have your profanity filter activated (accessible through your game menu, under settings –> preferences, and check the box next to Profanity filter), or you can choose to ignore the player completely. To do so, in your chat window, type “/ignore player name” (without the quotation marks) and everything that player says will not be displayed in your chat window(s).

I’m sorry for the troubles it may have caused you, and I hope that with these tools activated, you can live amusing and uneventful times with your son through Shadowbane. Good luck.

Not a single video game found.

Just after the shooting, Dr. Phil and religious anti-game crusader Jack Thompson were all-too-quick to point the finger at video (http://www.gwn.com/news/story.php/id/12287/No_Games_Found_in_Shooters_Dorm_at_Virginia_Tech.html) as being somehow at blame. We can now confirm that not a single video game was found in the dorm room of the killer. Of course, even if they found a huge collection of games, that would hardly prove it was the cause, assuming there is a cause, for the killings.

Here’s what they did find:

  • Chain from top left closet shelf
  • Folding knife & combination padlock
  • Compaq computer from desktop
  • Assorted documents, notepads, writings from desktop
  • Combination lock
  • Dremel tool and case
  • Nine books, two notebooks, envelopes, from top shelf
  • Assorted books & pads from lower shelf
  • Compact discs from desktops
  • Items from desktop & drawers: winchester multi tool, 3 notebooks, mail, checks, credit card
  • Items from 2nd door: Kodak (http://www.gwn.com/news/story.php/id/12287/No_Games_Found_in_Shooters_Dorm_at_Virginia_Tech.html) , Citibank statement
  • Two cases of compact discs from dresser top
  • Drive: Seagate: 80 Gb
  • Six sheets of green computer paper
  • Mirror with blue plastic housing
  • Dremel tool box with receipt
  • Dell Latitude service tag

There you have it, no (http://www.gwn.com/news/story.php/id/12287/No_Games_Found_in_Shooters_Dorm_at_Virginia_Tech.html) at all. Also, according to Cho Seung Hui’s roommates, the man never even played video games during his rare appearances in the common living area in the dorm.
